People Flocking: What Skills Do You Need?

People Flocking Activity Script

Cast

• 1 x Caller to wear a distinctive head dress e.g. a red cape
• Approx 12 Flockers

SetUp
• This activity could be used as an initial warm up, to gauge a groups response to a subject, or as an evaluation at the end of a session.
• This activity needs a large open space. If you want to film the activity, it's important to do this from a balcony, or somewhere safe above the scene an atrium is ideal.
• You will need a set of cards for the Caller to read from, with words or phrases related to the subject/issue that you want the group to respond to.

Instructions

1)
Caller
Walk around in the center of the space

Flockers
Walk randomly around the space, try not to bump into anyone else

2)
Caller
Call out the word/phrase written on the first card

Continue walk around the space, but, if feel positively about the thing that has just been read out, then move towards the Caller, if you disagree then move away. The more you agree the closer you need to move to the Caller, the more you disagree the further you should move away
e.g. If you agree with the statement, "the legal age people can vote should be 45." Then move towards the caller.
or e.g. If you are interested in learning how to dance, and the caller reads out "Learning to dance" then move towards them.

3)
Caller
Clap!

Flockers
Walk randomly around the space, try not to bump into anyone else

4)
Caller/Flockers - Repeat step 2 until the group has responded to all the cards.

Extension

De-centred People Flocking

As real Flocks have no leader, or centre, a more developed extension would be to have multiple Callers.
It is also possible to set up so that each Flocker is also a Caller.
This would necessitate each participant to repeatedly read out from their card, so that it can be heard as they move around. They would also move towards other participants if they are Calling something that they think or feel positively about, and avoid participants if they are Calling something that they think or feel negatively about.
